The Surinam toad (Pipa pipa) is one of the most unusual amphibians in the world. It lives in South America and has a completely flat body adapted for life in muddy water. Its most unique feature is its reproduction method: females carry fertilized eggs embedded in the skin of their backs. The young develop fully inside these pockets before emerging as miniature frogs. This unusual lifecycle helps protect offspring from predators.
